In 2008 our radical reinvention of ourselves at the post office includes these key changes:
We are a “full service” community post office completely inclusive of all BRC citizens and providing a heartfelt warm welcome to all.
Our full service includes interactive art--as via the creation of mailable postal art with materials and encouragement we provide at friendly shaded tables and seating within the post office foyier--as well as mail acceptance and delivery in liaison with the USPS.
Our goal is for each and every person who interacts with our post office to genuinely feel in their hearts they have received not only competent and trustworthy service but also an entirely welcome gift as well through our interaction and so, in consequence, to be wearing smiles on their faces as they walk away.
As a central aspect of our newly improved purpose the Burning Man Community Post Office (BMCPO) prepares Posties to serve not only BRC but also at regional burns. Posties with BRCPO experience are encouraged to go forth to their regional burns and create BMCPO branch post offices--based upon BMCPO principles of full service as well as our effective mail handling policies--at regional burns everywhere.
In 2008 the BMCPO’s special contribution to the “American Dream” theme is an emphasis on international communication and an honoring of America’s first Postmaster General: Benjamin Franklin, libertine par excellance among the Founding Fathers.
The post office is a major pathway via which the radical art and message of Burning Man goes out from BRC and the Regional Burns to the rest of the planet, as well as being a major pathway in which love sent from Burners far and wide reaches our community on the playa. As such we are not only providers of an essential service but also holders of a sacred trust.
