BMCPO Mission Statement
The mission of the Burning Man Community Post Office (BMCPO) in general and Black Rock City Post Office (BRCPO) in particular is to facilitate postal communication in the interest of promoting liberty, community, charitable service, and advancement in the areas of arts & sciences. BMCPO provides free, efficient, and friendly postal service within Black Rock City and Burning Man regional community events as well as between participants attending Burning Man events and the rest of the planet, fulfilling this mission by providing a corps of committed volunteers, training these volunteers, and supporting their service in using Burning Man-specific operating systems under the guidance and direction of dedicated and experienced postal supervisors coordinating internal operations and serving as the official liaison between the United States Postal Service (USPS) and BMCPO.
The BMCPO conforms with USPS regulations as such apply to Burning Man events vis a vis mail handling, acceptance, and delivery. As part of the interactive performance art integral to Burning Man community events the BMCPO may also facilitate community services such as providing a shaded area and materials for the creation of mailable postal art, intaking BM event passport applications, issuing BM event Green Cards, hosting a Most Wanted bulletin board, and other fun services congruent with post office functions. All BMCPO volunteers strive to serve all members of the Burning Man community in such a way that each and every person coming in contact with the BMCPO feels they have not only been well-served in terms of efficient postal service but have also genuinely received a welcome gift via the interaction.
